Peugeot / Citroen USB BOX 9702.EZ - Citroen C5 mk2 guide

EN

Hello,

Before starting the explanation part, here is some short info: the test subject is Citroen C5 mk2 (facelift) , radio - RD4. AUX and CD changer activated.

Perhaps, in internet you already found many topics how to set up or update that particular stock MP3 reader made for PSA.

How to connect and activate that module via LEXIA should be available online. Here I`ll try to give some collected information about firmware, and some other tips that maybe can be in some help.

The unit itself look like that:

So far what I found out is that even the car went into energy save mode, the 5V are still present on the USB plug. Or in other words, will be wise to remove the thumb drive for example if you`ll keep the car for long time on parking lot.

Maybe is better option the 12V power supply line to be connected via micro relay and turned off when the key is removed. Just thought though..

Next in the list - files. Here are they: firmware

What next?

- find some small USB stick (in my case 2GB), and format it on fat32 or exFat

- copy to to it the following files:

firmware_1.jpg

- start the car(to prevent energy saving mode to kick in), put the player ON and source to be the RADIO

- insert the stick in the USB port and wait about 1 minute. Some say about 30sek is enough but more reasonable time is 1 minute

That have been done, just unplug it slowly and check in computer the thumb drive. Inside should see some extra file like that:

firmware_2.jpg

The folder name is the current firmware and perhaps the new extra BIN files are some original data from the controller.

Now, remove them and copy that file: USPA_UPD.ROM But only that! Nothing else.

firmware_4.jpg

- once again: start the car, player on, RADIO as source, insert the flash drive. Wait about 2min this time. After removing the flash drive, check it content. If it is empty, everything went smooth. To be sure, that the new firmware is uploaded properly make the same test as described above.

And as final words, add first the 2 -> 3.03 update, then 3.04. What is better with that firmware?

Well… , didn`t see any major difference except one idea fast loading the folders/files. Didn`t manage yet to make it to show the CD text on the LCD but that`s not that important anyway.

Different ideas :

That unit I manage to find in ebay cost about 80e including delivery and it was new (never used). But still quite expensive for what is doing I guess..

The cheapest option is to buy just AUX cable (or even make one) and activate it function with LEXIA. Well. You can add some extra “tuning”.

Currently in EBAY / Aliexpress you can order ready Bluetooth module with plug for few bucks like that one:

bluetooth_ready.jpg

That is straight fit , but 12V you should take from some place (like the cigar lighter socket cable) where after the key is removed it goes fully OFF. Otherwise it will start draining the car battery.

One other thing more: you need to watch out when you get the cable. To be possible to use it in AUX1 it should be like that one:

aux_cable.jpg

The cable what I got, was with same 3 pins, but they where the first left side position.. Easy to re-position them contacts on the right pins but hey.. still need to look at it before placing inside.

I bought myself as I mention above that USB BOX 9702.EZ and it also include AUX-IN option. Then bought Bluetooth to 3.5mm 5V board like that:

usb_box_0702_ez_2.jpg

Didn`t want to connect it straight to 5V inside the USB box, for the very same 12V issue mention above. Or until find proper way to shut down the 12V line it will be connected via USB->miniUSB short cable. Plug in when need..

One other option (during the writing of that article didn`t try it) is to use Pin 11 from the main plug to supply 12V instead the original constant supply one. (plug C, pin 3)

Other boards?

Yep, here are..

- bluetooth to 3.5mm board with 12-16V to 5V regulator (green or red)

voltage_regulator_0.jpg

Green one:

voltage_regulator_3.jpg

is adjustable. Good piece and size, but need to remove the pot. with some resistor to guarantee 5V output wan`t mess. My favorite so far is:

voltage_regulator_1.jpg

Here, you can make it fixed to 5V output by solder two spots.

Put that two in some box, connect the audio jack and power and.. here you have your bluetooth unit.

What next can be done.. ? What about USB/ SD card reading?

Now, getting for example the red board, one can remove the buttons from it and install them on that free places around A/C control panel. There, also can be bolted some USB female plug and connected to that board.

One problem so far I see in that scenario is the sound quality. Some say is really not what you might expect.. but at least have some really cheap alternative to the CAN BUS MP3 devices.

Thanks for reading that crap!
